Background of the Study

Traditional medicine has been an integral part of African healthcare systems for centuries, providing alternative treatment options alongside modern medicine (WHO, 2024). In Nigeria, a significant proportion of the population relies on traditional medicine for primary healthcare, particularly in rural areas where access to conventional healthcare services is limited (Adekunle et al., 2024). Traditional medicine in Nigeria encompasses herbal remedies, spiritual healing, bone-setting, and divination, often deeply rooted in cultural beliefs and practices (Bello & Yusuf, 2024).

Kwara State, located in north-central Nigeria, has a rich tradition of herbal medicine, with many individuals seeking care from traditional healers before or alongside modern medical treatment (Nwankwo, 2024). Factors influencing the preference for traditional medicine include affordability, accessibility, cultural acceptance, and perceived effectiveness (WHO, 2024). However, concerns regarding the safety, standardization, and regulation of traditional medicine persist (Adebayo et al., 2024). While some herbal remedies have demonstrated therapeutic potential, the absence of rigorous clinical validation and regulatory oversight poses risks of toxicity and adverse effects (NCDC, 2024).

Despite its widespread use, there is limited empirical research on the role of traditional medicine in healthcare-seeking behavior in Kwara State. This study aims to examine the factors influencing the use of traditional medicine, its perceived effectiveness, and its interaction with modern healthcare practices.

Statement of the Problem

The healthcare system in Nigeria faces challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, high healthcare costs, and limited access to formal medical facilities, particularly in rural communities (WHO, 2024). As a result, many individuals turn to traditional medicine as a primary or complementary healthcare option (Bello & Yusuf, 2024). However, there is a lack of standardized regulation and scientific validation for many traditional medical practices, raising concerns about their safety and efficacy (Adebayo et al., 2024).

In Kwara State, despite the widespread use of traditional medicine, little is known about the reasons behind its preference and how it influences healthcare-seeking behavior (Adekunle et al., 2024). Understanding these factors is essential for integrating traditional medicine into Nigeria’s healthcare system while ensuring patient safety. This study seeks to assess the role of traditional medicine in healthcare decision-making and its implications for public health.

Objectives of the Study

1. To examine the factors influencing the preference for traditional medicine in Kwara State.

2. To assess the perceived effectiveness and safety of traditional medicine.

3. To explore the interaction between traditional medicine and modern healthcare practices.

Research Questions

1. What factors influence individuals to choose traditional medicine over modern healthcare in Kwara State?

2. How do users perceive the effectiveness and safety of traditional medicine?

3. How does traditional medicine interact with modern healthcare practices in Kwara State?

Research Hypotheses

1. The preference for traditional medicine is influenced by cultural beliefs and accessibility.

2. Traditional medicine users perceive it as an effective and affordable alternative to modern medicine.

3. The integration of traditional medicine into modern healthcare systems can improve overall healthcare access.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the use of traditional medicine in Kwara State, assessing its role in healthcare decision-making and its impact on public health. Limitations may include difficulty in obtaining data from traditional healers, variations in herbal formulations, and potential bias in self-reported health outcomes.
